A classic Southern city, Belle Meade, Tennessee, is an upscale and affluent community and suburb of Nashville. The city is in Davidson County and has no centralized government; instead its government is absorbed by Nashville-Davidson County, absorbed into the metropolitan government of however, it retains its independent city status with its its own police force, its own mayor and its own city hall. Belle Meade is just about a mile outside of Nashville and in 2000 was home to around 3,000 residents. The city makes up an area of just over three square miles and the median household income for residents is around $145,000 a year, a number much higher than the state and region's average.

The town is home to the former vice president, Al Gore, who was a senator for the state before ascending to the office of vice president. The biggest industries in Belle Meade are finance and insurance; professional, scientific, and technical services; real estate, rental and leasing. The town's most notable site is the Belle Meade Plantation, a 30-acre historic site complete with an old Southern mansion, built in 1853. Today the mansion offers daily educational tours and can be booked for special events. Belle Meade is also home to a golf course and shopping area, Belle Meade Country Club and Westgate Shopping Center.

Belle Meade is also near the Percy Warner Golf Course and Percy Warner Park, and just a mile from the four-year Lipscomb University and a two-year school, Aquinas Junior College. There are about 20 colleges and universities in Nashville to choose from as well. It is just one mile from the nearest medical center, St Thomas Hospital. It is near Hillwood Country Club and The Mall at Green Hills is only about a mile away. Students in grade schools attend institutions operated by the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.
